Top MBA SchoolsChoosing an MBA schoolThe fact is, if you're serious about a career in business, and especially finance, a degree from a top MBA school can open a lot of doors for you. Businesses use MBA schools as pre-screening in their recruiting – they know that if you managed to get accepted into a top MBA school and then graduate, you're probably a top candidate for their jobs and internships. Do remember, there are a lot of MBA schools out there, and not everyone can get into one of these top schools. However, for most considering business school it makes sense to aim high, at least with an application or two. Researching these top schools will give you GMAT scores and work experience examples to shoot for. If you apply, and come up a little short, there's a reasonable chance you will be in good shape to get into another fine school that isn't quite on this list. Harvard, Stanford, Upenn and a few others are the creme of the crop, but second tier schools, are really some fine institutions. Duke, NYU, UCLA, UVA, UT and others may indeed be a step down from the top, but it isn't a huge step. If your career is on the fast track and you are happy with the industry you're in, you might decide not to go back to school to anything short of a top 5 school, and that could be a very reasonable decision. On the other hand, even slightly lower ranked schools are still regarded very highly in business, and these schools serve the same pre-screening function that the very top schools do. The fact is, an MBA sets you apart, and can give you a serious advantage in your job search. |
